The Tupyara Temple, a beacon of spiritual enlightenment and healing, has a rich history rooted in the life of its founder, José Herman Hungerbühler. Born in Diamantina, Minas Gerais, Brazil, on May 28, 1903, José Herman was the son of João Benedito Hungerbühler, a Swiss engineer, and Maria Leonor Hungerbühler, also born in Diamantina. From an early age, he experienced extraordinary phenomena, such as seeing and hearing spirits, which would shape his life’s journey and the creation of the Tupyara Temple.

José Herman’s early connection with the spiritual realm deeply influenced his path. Although he initially pursued religious studies at the Catholic Seminary of his hometown and later at the Seminary of São Paulo, he ultimately left behind his desire to become a Catholic priest. Instead, he embarked on a new professional direction, becoming a member of the staff at the Caixa Econômica Federal in Rio de Janeiro in 1922. However, his spiritual gifts were never far from him.
In 1929, at the age of 26, José Herman fully embraced Spiritism, a decision inspired by the constant presence of spirits who guided him towards this spiritual practice. Through his mediumistic abilities, particularly his clairvoyance, clairaudience, and intuition, he began to receive confirmation of his spiritual mission. His mediumship became a tool for the realization of spiritual work in the sessions at Tupyara, with guidance from renowned spiritual mentors such as Tupyara, Padre Manoel, Frei Rogério, Dr. Ramayaka, Dr. Fernando Vasconcelos, and Dr. Adolfo Bezerra de Menezes.
José Herman’s dedication to spreading the teachings of Spiritism and the gospel of peace and healing marked the core mission of the Tupyara Temple. He became a missionary for spiritual enlightenment, working alongside his spiritual guides to help those in need of spiritual assistance and healing.
José Herman Hungerbühler passed away on May 11, 1964, but his legacy lives on through the Tupyara Temple. His unwavering faith, commitment to spiritual work, and profound connection with the spiritual realm continue to inspire and guide those who seek healing and understanding in the teachings of Spiritism.
The Tupyara Temple remains a sanctuary of light, offering spiritual support to all who seek solace, guidance, and growth on their spiritual journeys. Join us as we honor the legacy of José Herman and the continuing work of the Temple, guided by the spiritual mentors who continue to guide and protect the mission of Tupyara.
